You may have seen a lot of survival knives in the market today. However, if you don’t have any idea what to pick, it is always a good thing to do some research. Not all knives are created the same. There are those that are more practical than others in some scenarios. And also, construction of these knives matter depending on which application you are going to use it for. So how do you actually choose a survival knife?
The first thing that you have to consider is the size of the knife. Now, you don’t want it to be too big and you also don’t want it to be too small. There are a number of tasks that you can’t do with the large ones. For instance, if you are looking to do some intricate work outdoors, then a large knife will become useless. On the other hand, if you purchased the small one, you may not be able to use it for chopping wood.
As rule of thumb, especially with the number of survival knives that I’ve handled over the years, I say that around 9 to 11 inches work best for this purpose.
Next, you also want to make sure that you will invest in a fixed blade rather than a folding knife. Now, you might argue that folding survival knives can come in handy. This isn’t always the case. There are instances when parts of the folding knife might actually give up while you are using it outside.
Also, you want to make sure that the blade has a full-tang construction. Compared to a rat-tailed version, a full tang is sturdier and more secure to use for outdoors. Remember that if you are using a knife and it then comes loose because it isn’t a full-tang in construction, it can be quite dangerous on your part. Remember that a full-tang survival knife is made of one-piece metal. it means that it is durable and handy in different scenarios.
Another important detail that you should check is if the knife actually has a sharp tip. Remember that not all knives have this design. There are knives that have a blunt end. Now, having a pointed knife means that it can be used primarily as a self-defense weapon whether against animals or against man. Next, you also have to consider the versatility of this type of knife.
Lastly, you also want to check the pommel or the bottom of the handle of your knife. Often times, this part will be used for pounding and hammering. Now, it should be solid and made of durable material.
When it comes to finding the right knife, there are a number of things that you will have to consider. You will need to take a closer look at the applications and the different scenarios that you might face in these situations. Now, these are just some of the usual things that you might want to consider if you are going to buy a knife. In reality, though, it can be based on a person’s preference too.
